Syria: Assad’s Army promised military Intervention from Russia

Ifrane – “This Is Wafi Abdouss Blog” Returns after nearly one month of activity absence. We comeback with an explosive but short article about Syria, because as many might know, the US is preparing to attack yet another Arab country.

Accusing Assad of using chemical weapons, The US and its allies called for military actions against Assad but the pace of “military intervention” soon faded as US allies including its key ally the UK announced they will not take part in any attack against Syria. The US however, is sticking to its position and remains deadlocked to strike Syria. On the other hand, we can exclusively report that sources from within the Syrian government have confirmed that Russia promised to provide strong military support in order to keep rebels from taking advantage of the supposed strike. The source adds that Russia is committed to protect its interests in the Mediterranean sea.

Syrian Rebels Seize Khan Al Assal

Aleppo – Syrian forces loyal to president Assad’s government may have lost control of a strategic town south of Aleppo in another blow to the government in the north.

Khan Al Assal is a district situated in the west of Aleppo and has been, until recently, one of the very few strongholds of the government in the north. The district is just few kilometers away from the government-controled West Aleppo. The government of Mr. Assad is still in control of western Aleppo (about 45% of the city) but it remains nearly besieged from all sides by the rebels who control the rest of the city and much of the countryside.

The fight for Aleppo began about a year ago when rebels attacked the northern commercial hub in a bid to transform Syria’s largest city into a “Benghazi of Syria”, however, the government soon sent reinforcements and entrenched itself in the opulent parts of Aleppo, targeting the rebel-held and poor neighborhoods with heavy weaponry, tank fire and airstrikes.

50,000 Syrian Government Soldier Killed since 2011

Saidia – BBC Arabic reports today that sources close to the Syrian ministry of defense told them that some 50,000 regular army soldiers were killed since the beginning of the Syrian unrest.

President Assad’s government has been relying on its military capabilities to fight back rebels trying to oust President Assad, and after nearly 2 years and a half, 95000 killed and nearly 3 Million refugee scattered in neighboring countries. The Syrian Arab Army is to say the least weakened by the ongoing conflict and sources tell BBC Arabic that 50,000 soldiers and militiamen were killed between 2011 and 2013 (to date) while 200 tanks and 440 other heavy weaponry destroyed, damaged or lost.

Even with 50,000 killed, the armed forces of Syria are believed to number to as much as 250,000 soldier and reports suggest that out of that number over 120,000 are hardcore loyalists to Assad. On top of the regular army, Assad’s government relies on militias and armed brigades loyal to Assad numbering to as much as 130,000 fighter. All of this without mentioning Hezbollah’s current 15,000 elite fighters stationed and participating in Syria as well as Iranian revolutionary guards and Iraqi fighters sympathetic to Assad (reports).

President Assad Forces Regain Full Control of Al Qaboun District

Saidia – Syrian government forces announced today that Government forces have regained control of 95% of the strategic Qaboun district near the capital Damascus.

Yesterday, government troops backed by tanks and artillery moved into Qaboun after breaching rebel defenses. Opposition activists claimed Republican Guards troops detained hundreds of people in public places to prevent rebel fighters from hitting their forces while government sources claimed that they’re in control of as much as 95% of the district with few pockets of resistance left inside the district.

If the fall of the district is actually confirmed, it will serve as yet another blow to efforts by the opposition to siege the capital.
