Saidia – After nearly 2 weeks, government forces are still to fully regain control over whats left of the once rebel-held areas in Homs city, as rebel forces continue to resist in some parts of Al Khalidiya district and old city.
The Australian reports that the last opposition-held areas of Homs are set to fall within days to the Syrian army after rebel forces decided to “sacrifice” their areas in the country’s third-largest city to the government, according to diplomats and opposition sources.
The fall of Homs will represent a strategic victory for the government following a previous breakthrough in the border town of Qusair. The victory once reached will not only showcase the government forces as the upper hand in the battlefield, it will also help president Assad’s forces to strengthen its grip on the route linking Damascus to the Mediterranean coast.
The rebels have apparently chosen to consolidate their hold on areas in the north near the Turkish borders, while their strongholds in central, southern and around the capital seem to be on the verge of totally falling to government forces.
